Julie Remembers...

that the class of 1986 RULED!!!!

This is the only picture that I could find this weekend, I have to find my portraits.  But this picture was taken right before my highschool graduation in June 1986.  We were at Benihana with my parents and family friends.  Check out my dad's mustache, cool.

It was a fun dinner and I was excited to be graduating soon.  I can't believe my hair, and that I tried to get a perm so many times, with the same results.  The perm would never take and then I'd have limp curl that I would tease and spray.  I guess this was the look back then.  Nice.

Some of the men from 1986

Some of us are old enough to remember 1986...

1986 was a year of breaking out, and breaking the rules. From a triumvirate of rebellious teens taking a day off to a hairy cat-eating alien taking over a family's garage, there were plenty of rules that were broken in `86. And as far as break-outs go, there was a wheel-spinning game show hottie, an Australian with a rather large knife, and - of course - a teddy bear with a tape deck for a stomach. How futuristic!

When Ferris Bueller took his now-infamous day off, we all followed, and spent it at the local movie theater. Bueller became a huge hit, and helped launch Matthew Broderick into the land of superstardom. Another star who broke out was a beautiful blonde named Vanna White, who could turn letters on Wheel of Fortune like nobody's business.

Another breakout of '86 was the unusual collaboration between rock and rap stars, as Aerosmith and Run DMC knocked down walls - literally and figuratively - in their hit Walk This Way. And while Steven Tyler was gyrating with Run, a whole new craze began across the country.

The Mets broke out of the shadow of their cross-town rivals as they won their first championship since the 60s, in one of the most memorable World Series of all time. Robert Palmer broke just about every feminist rule in the book, as he placed a group of sexy, similar-looking women behind him in his famous video Addicted to Love. Swatch Watches also broke out in '86, and would eventually become a true 80s icon.

Paul Hogan broke out as an international star with Crocodile Dundee, and the rules of politics were broken when Clint Eastwood brought his scowl to Carmel, CA, where he was elected Mayor. Our hearts were broken when the Challenger exploded on live TV, bringing a nation to tears. And lest we forget Oprah Winfrey, breaking out as a superstar and breaking the mold of television forever.

ALF broke the rules on more than one occasion in the Tanners' garage, and broke out as a huge star. And while he wasn't as funny or mobile, Teddy Ruxpin broke out as a teddy bear with a heart of gold and a stomach of tape decks. The Cosby Show broke into a gigantic hit, and Janet Jackson broke from the label of "Michael's little sister" to become a mega-star in her own right.

A group of kids broke the rules when they went looking for a dead body in Stand By Me while Tom Cruise's Maverick had the need for speed and broke out of his father's shadow in Top Gun. Cruise, Anthony Edwards, and Val Kilmer also broke women's hearts across the globe with a shirtless volleyball game for the ages.

From films to television to the news, 1986 broke through with an attitude. From unforgettable breakouts to rebellious rule-breakers, it is a year that is not easily forgotten.

Do you dare to journey back to a time when OP (stands for Ocean Pacific, a clothing brand for you younguns) was fly and Jolt Cola was the next best thing? When The Fly was the grossest movie you had ever seen? We Double Dare you to watch read about 1986…so put on your finest LA Gear and let’s go!

“All the sugar and twice the caffeine!” Jolt Cola was the weapon of choice for high schoolers taking with term papers, speed freaks and all-night truck drivers in 1986. Just ask the cast of Pee Wee’s Playhouse…they must have been on something. As was George Lucas, when he came up with the brilliant concept behind Howard the Duck. A wise-cracking duck from outer space falls in love with Lea Thompson…comedy gold! Well, audiences thought otherwise and this cinematic achievement was one of the biggest flops of the 80s.

Luckily, Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger were heating up the big screen in 1986 in 9 ½ Weeks. Come on, you know you’ve memorized your favorite scenes….the refrigerator scene…Kim’s strip tease…sex in the wet alley…just to name a few. And speaking of hot, who was hotter than Demi Moore in 1986? She sizzled with Rob Lowe in About Last Night and rocked little John Cusack in One Crazy Summer.

Eddie Murphy left our sides splitting with his portrayal of a private investigator seeking The Golden Child. “I-I-I-I-I-I want the knife!” And…if your rich, white parents won’t give you the money to go to Harvard Law School…just pretend you’re black! C. Thomas Howell crossed the racial divide and bagged Rae Dawn Chong in Soul Man, despite not even remotely resembling a real black man.

Primetime soaps were sizzling in 1986. Bobby Ewing came back from the dead on Dallas and it turned out that his death was a dream? Say what? Can they do that? The cast of LA Law kept us tuned in with its compelling courtroom drama and sexy cast. And the secrets of Al Capone’s vault were sure to be amazing! Will there be dead bodies? Millions of dollars in cash? Just ask Geraldo Rivera what he found in there—it will shock you!

There was plenty of fun for the kids in 1986. Anyone up for a rousing game of Lazer Tag? Rainbow Brite was every little girl’s best friend. Garbage Pail Kids were a gnarly response to the ubiquitous too-cute Cabbage Patch Kids. And the garment industry gave a shout-out to the left coast with LA Gear and OP clothing.

Two words: Michael Jordan. Need we say more? His stellar 63-point game against the Celtics in April of 1986 proved who was the man. And how much did you love your Air Jordans?

Remember a time when Jon Bon Jovi’s poodle hair was the hottest thing going, Dionne Warwick taught us "What Friends Are For", the Bangles managed to be sexy and "Walk like an Egyptian" at the same time, Paul and Chevy dueled it out in "You Can Call me Al", Gloria Estefan taught us how to "Conga" and Don Johnson was desperately seeking a "Heartbeat".
